Austria-Israel multimodal – “Managed by Prangl“

Prangl organised the entire logistics chain for an extra heavy boiler from Marchtrenk (Austria) to Israel

The task for the specialists of Prangl (Brunn am Gebirge near Vienna) was to transport an entire 62.5 tonne boiler – 4.6 metres in diameter – and its components from Marchtrenk, Upper Austria, to Israel. In addition a package was also delivered from Germany. The challenge of initial transport to the shipyard port in Linz was met by a 9-axle vessel deck, a 3-axle low-loader and a 2-axle low bed trailer.

The key issue was not only selecting a suitable transport route, but also the suitable transhipment option. Together with Rhenus Logistics Austria GmbH, the Prangl team developed a special solution: Direct transfer from the truck onto the barge in the port of Linz shipyard was handled by the shipyard crane and a 250-tonne mobile crane lifting the platform at the same time.

The barge is 135 metres long and is one of the largest and most modern barges in Europe. It took 12 days to carry the load safely to the sea port of Antwerp via the Danube, the Main, the Main-Danube Canal and the Rhine. River transport provides an excellent alternative to conventional road transport for heavy, oversized items. It is a good way for very large packages to cover long distances cheaply and in an environmentally friendly manner.

In Antwerp, transfer of the packages onto an MAFI trailer was organised and the item continued its journey to Ashdod (Israel) on a ro-ro ship. The packages were unloaded and received by the customer as planned despite poor weather conditions.
