Austrian logistics award 2011 goes to Schenker & Co AG

Innovative air freight-hub system brought Schenker & Co AG the Austrian logistics award 2011:

Schenker & Co AG (Vienna) was awarded the Austrian logistics prize 2011. On 8 June 2011 the logistics association „Verein Netzwerk Logistik“ (VNL) gave the award in the category “best economic result improvement by the use of a logistics tool” in the frame of a gala event of the Austrian logistics day in Linz. The prize was given to Kurt Leidinger of the Management board air and sea freight, Schenker & Co AG, as well as by Frank Markovits, Product Manager Air Freight, Schenker & Co AG.

The prize honoured the considerably improved economic efficiency that Schenker & Co AG achieved in Austria and south-eastern Europe thanks to optimising its air freight processes. The increased efficiency is based on an optimised routing concept for shipments from Asia to Europe. Shipments from Asia had previously been imported separately from 14 countries in south-eastern Europe. This now prized traffic concept joins consignments at the departure stations in Asia, and forwards them to the air freight hub in Frankfurt. This is where Lkw shuttle transport the shipments to Vienna, where they are consolidated and distributed to south-eastern Europe.

According to the estimation of the jury of the Austrian logistics prize the special feature of this solution becomes visible in Europe: For the first time the air freight division and the land transport division join transportations – which is a novelty, as both transport modes have completely different quality parameters regarding time, documentation and security. A major cost factor of the new air freight processes is that routing, capacity access and selection of the airlines are organised centrally.

Customers can profit from considerably more flexibility, as the frequency of some departures to the western stations in south-eastern Europe ex Vienna have been increased to five times as many. “This solution enables us to make processes more effective but also to establish strongly systemised traffic for our customers. Importations from the Far East can be delivered to recipients in Austria and south-eastern Europe almost exactly to the hour“, Kurt Leidinger explains two core aspects of the prized logistics tool.
