Austrian Post conducts a survey on the parcel market

42 million parcels to 4 million customers: Mail order and online business on the rise – also for the benefit of the Austrian Post

On behalf of the Austrian Post, Kreutzer Fischer & Partner have conducted a survey on Austria’s B2C parcel market. DI Peter Umundum, CEO Post, presented the results about volume, structure and satisfaction of the parcel recipients on 8 September.

More than 90 per cent of the age group 15-30 with great internet affinity buys online at least once in six months. The quote of all age groups is almost 70 per cent. This means more than two thirds of alls Austrians regularly shop by mail order. They order mainly clothing, shoes and leather goods – accounting for 41 per cent of all orders, 31 per cent are media such as books, CDs, videos and software and 19 per cent are electronic devices and computers. Und der B2C Paketmarkt mit 42 Mio. Paketen wächst kontinuierlich, zuletzt mit 1,5 Prozent.

Rising order volumes mean also rising returns. About 9 million parcels are returned every year in Austria, 80 per cent thereof clothing. Continuously rising volumes are also a challenge for parcel service providers regarding the first delivery quote and returns handling.

About 71 per cent of the parcels are delivered on the first try. About 75 per cent of the parcels are delivered directly to the recipient, 9 per cent are left with the neighbours, and 14 per cent are collected from a branch. The Austrian Post is expanding its service to further increase the quota of deliveries on the first try. Thus the Post has set up about 7,300 reception boxes in residential complexes. These are boxes, similar to letter boxes, where parcels can be deposited securely, and which can only be opened by the recipient with an RFID chip.
