Austrian Post: EUR 500 million investment program for parcel logistics

“We have the claim to be the number one in terms of quality in parcel logistics. Our strategic response to domestic and foreign competitors is the best delivery quality,” Georg Pölzl, Director General of Austrian Post AG, commented on the corporate strategy in the growing market for parcel logistics services in Austria.

Austria is a country where a lot of parcels are received, the actual competition takes place abroad, “because big senders like Amazon and Zalando are the ones who determine the market,” added the director. Regarding service quality, Georg Pölzl emphasised on the high first-time delivery rate of more than 90 per cent.

“If this does not succeed, the recipients will receive the consignments as comfortably as with no other supplier. With returns, we are the leading player in Austria with 90 per cent market share.” This is owed to the fact that the branch network is tightly knit with 1,800 locations (including 1,350 Post Partners).

Austrian Post is currently running a three-year investment program worth EUR 500 million for conservation measures, infrastructure expansion and the improvement of IT systems. The parcel logistics center in Hagenbrunn (Lower Austria) will be officially opened on 1 October 2019. In 2020, a new building will follow in Kalsdorf near Graz.

The takeover of DHL parcel business in Austria depends on the approval of the competition authority. “We will keep all of DHL’s 200 employees, because we need them”, Georg Pölzl emphasised. The DHL parcel logistics centers in Vienna South, Enns and Wundschuh near Graz will also be integrated. However they are refraining from purchasing the new DHL property in Hagenbrunn. “But I’m not worried about this logistics location”, reassured Georg Pölzl.
