BLG Logistics Group: Considerable growth in 2012

Container throughput of BLG Logistics Group in Bremerhaven rose seven per cent in 2012

The BLG Logistics Group (Bremen) registered considerable growth in cargo handling as well as in sales revenues in 2012. To journalists BLG CEO Detthold Aden announced annual sales of EUR 1.2 billion. This is a year-on-year increase of 20 per cent.

Aden expects growth in the terminal network of the subsidiary Eurogate of around three per cent this year. As far as container traffic is concerned, Bremerhaven is the only port in the Hamburg-Antwerp range that still records growth. Aden reckons with around 6 million TEU this year, around seven per cent more than in 2011. Conventional cargo handling in Neustädter Hafen has grown about a third to around 4.3 million tons.

In the automobile division BLG expects over 7 million vehicles this year (previous year: 6.5 million) altogether. The strongest location in the terminal network is Bremerhaven, where another record level is targeted with 2.2 million vehicles (previous year: 2.1 million). Export is the engine of growth. Detthold Aden: “Bremerhaven has increasingly developed into an export port in recent years. Today we have 75 per cent export and only 25 per cent import."

In the BLG contract logistics division business is developing positively. A big new deal in car parts logistics for BMW in Wackersdorf was launched in July. The retail logistics segment continues to run at a good pace. Construction work at the Bremen high-bay warehouse in preparation for new Tchibo Direct online business is progressing on schedule. The structures have been completed. At the moment conveyor systems are being installed. BLG is investing over EUR 50 million there. Through this online business the logistics volume for Tchibo will double.
