Buss Sea Terminal Sassnitz brings Siemens to the broad gauge

Desiro RUS regional trains of Siemens AG are transhipped from the Buss Sea Terminal Sassnitz to Russia

Buss Sea Terminal Sassnitz assumes part of the logistics chain for a total of 38 regional trains from Siemens AG, which in the coming months will be loaded at the ferry port Sassnitz and transported to Russia. The first of the five-part "Lastotschka" units (Russian for "swallow") passed the terminal on the island of Ruegen, a member of the Hamburg Buss Group, in late February.

The 38 regional trains are designed for the Russian broad gauge network and determined to be used at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Since the rail cars are well about two feet wider than in Germany, land transport by rail is excluded. Therefore, the regional trains from the Siemens plant in Krefeld, are first shipped to Amsterdam, where the transfer takes place from a river to a seagoing vessel, followed by further transport to the ferry port Sassnitz.

Attached to adapter racks, the roughly 60-ton train parts with about 26 meters lenght, 3.5 meters width and almost five meters in height are synchronously unloaded from the hold of the ship by means of two mobile port cranes at the Buss Sea Terminal Sassnitz. A regional forwarding company organises the transport to the transfer station on the Russian broad gauge. The shipment from Sassnitz to Ust Luga is done with the broad gauge rail ferry MS "Petersburg".
