Clearly more cargo traffic on the Danube in Austria

Preliminary statements of Statistik Austria and via donau show clear positive trend of cargo transport on the Danube

In the first half of the year 2010 a clear positive trend of cargo transport on the Danube can be seen in the preliminary statement of Statistik Austria, as via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft writes in a report. In the first six months 2010 inland vessels transported 4.9 million tons of goods on the Austrian segment of the Danube, which is a plus of 16.7 per cent compared to the same period of last year. However, this result is nearly 15 per cent below the one that has not been affected by the financial and economic crisis in the first half of 2008, but this is a clear sign for the recovery of the transport market on the Danube.

Compared to the first six months of 2009 imported transport volumes rose 32.1 per cent or 678,433 tons to 2.8 million tons (down 7.6 per cent compared to the first half of the year 2008). Transit showed a moderate increase of 3.2 per cent or 36,615 tons to 1.2 million tons (down 17.3 % compared on the first half of the year 2008). Compared to the same period last year export declined 10.3 per cent or 84,192 tons to 700,000 tons (down 32.1 % compared to the first half of the year 2008). In national traffic 221,056 tons were transported – plus 52.9 per cent or 76,497 tons compared to the first six months of 2009 (down 4.2 % compared on the first half of 2008).

As for the types of cargo transported in the first half of the year 2010, the biggest volume increases were seen with ores and metal scrap (up 51.6 %), fertilisers (up 59.3 %) and stones, earth and building materials (up 61.2 %). Increases of each about 30,000 tons were posted for the goods groups iron, steel and non-ferrous metals, chemical products and mineral oil products.
