CombiNet: concept NINA brings advantages for truck traffic

Restructuring of national unaccompanied combined transport causes headache to the members of the CombiNet association

In a press release from 12 April the ComiNet association warns against the consequences of Rail Cargo Austria’s NINA system for the development of national unaccompanied combined transport. In this release the members fear the current focus of the concept NINA could further increase the competitive advantage of trucks with regard to speed and flexibility, as opposed to the railway. According to the release just the terminal in Bludenz could expect a back-shift of 20,000 tons per year to the road. At the terminal Linz at least 1,000 containers per year could be shifted to road, CombiNet estimates.

Moreover some routes will start experiencing a “downward spiral“: The connection of Hall in Tyrol, reduced to three course pairs per week, was showing a load factor of just 30 per cent. This fed fears of a further reduction of the offering and a related decreasing attractiveness. A similar development can be seen with the reduced service with Styria, the members of CombiNet are warning. The linking of the terminals Enns, Linz and Vienna-Freudenau to continental block train services still needs to be clarified.

Since 4 April 2011 national unaccompanied combined transport of Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) is handled by use of the “NINA“-system. NINA stands for „National Intermodal Network Austria“, which means a comprehensive restructuring of traffic between Austria’s combined transport terminals.
