Continued investments at port of Linz

Port of Linz registers considerable declines in the first half of the current financial year

The port of Linz had to face considerable declines in almost all segments in the past financial year (1 October 2008 – 30 September 2009). The only good news is that the business segment warehousing logistics and rental of premises and halls is used to its full capacity at the moment. At the container terminal, throughput fell from the 2008 record level (225,332 TEU) to 176,023 TEU in the financial year 2009. Total throughput on the waterway dropped by 14. 9 per cent from almost 1 million tons last year to 868,055 tons this year. The commercial port handled 456,723 tons, or 19.8 per cent less than in the previous year. Also the tank port had to face a minus of 8.7 per cent from 450,522 tons in 2008 to 411,322 tons of handled mineral oil products in 2009. Total performance of the port amounted to 2.6 million tons (down 19.7 per cent). With a gross operating result of EUR 5.5 million, the result after deduction of exceptional items amounts to EUR 3.5 million (down 17 per cent). The first six months of the current fiscal year showed further losses.

After the hall for dangerous and water endangering goods, which was enlarged to 3,700 m² and 7,944 pallet slots, was – thanks to the fiercer regulatory requirements – well received among customers, the port of Linz plans further investments. In the calendar year 2010 they want to start projects with a total volume of almost EUR 4 million. These include e.g. the conversion of the Linz09 Capital of Culture-hall into a deep freeze facility with around 3,500 pallet slots (EUR 1.2 million), the completion of the already rented and operating Halle 6 into a production hall, as well as more safety equipment such as fencing the port area, video surveillance and railway gates.
