Rhenus establishes its own bonded warehouse near the Russian border

Rhenus group consolidates its customs expertise in Russia with a major investment in the Smolensk region

The Rhenus Group is aiming to consolidate its position as a specialist for transport and logistics services with destinations in the Russian Federation by constructing its own bonded warehouse in the Smolensk region. CEO Klemens Rethmann, and the governor of the Smolensk region, Sergey Antufyev, signed a declaration of intent to complete the “Establishment of a Bonded Warehouse for Temporary Storage” investment project at the TransRussia fair.

“We attach great importance to the fact that our services are adapted to meet the latest market conditions. In order to provide our customers with high-quality customs services in Smolensk, we are building our own bonded warehouse in the region,” Klemens Rethmann, CEO of Rhenus AG & Co. KG, said, summing up the project near the border with Belarus. The background of this measure is the new customs policy of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation. Moving the customs offices to the border regions shall simplify customs clearance and relieve the major cities of traffic.

Thus the Rhenus subsidiary Revival Express prepares to construct an own customs office in the Smolensk region. They already secured the land by means of a preliminary agreement. Construction work is due to start in the second half of the year 2010. In the first stage a bonded warehouse for temporary storage will be built. After this, there are plans to expand the logistics complex to an area measuring 30,000 m² 25,000 m² f which will be used as a warehouse for throughput.

Rhenus is planning to handle normal commercial goods at its own facilities during the first half of 2011 and to provide later on intermediate storage for all types of items except hazardous goods. It is also planned to use the warehouse for throughput of groupage cargo. The bonded warehouse will match European standards. In term of security they will have their own access control system and video monitoring.
