DB Schenker Rail puts sparkling wine on the rail for DHL

DHL FoodServices covers long-distance routes from Spain to Germany with Railports on the railway:

DHL FoodServices GmbH has shifted part of the shipments for Freixenet, producer of wine and sparkling wine, on the route between Spain and Germany from road to railway. With the support of DB Schenker Rail 6.900 paletts of wine and sparkling wine were transported from the end of December 2010 until the end of May this year, which means more than 3.1 million bottles.

DB Schenker Rail is in charge of the complete transport. The pallets are transported by truck from the filling plant in Villafranca del Penedes near Barcelona to Perpignan, 200 kilometres away in southern France. This is where DB Schenker Railport carries out the reloading to rail wagons. Afterwards the journey is continued on the rail to the logistics centre in Darmstadt, from where it is forwarded by truck to the supply and distribution warehouse in Bingen.

„Our innovative and European-wide door-to-door logistics based on DB Schenker Railports closes gaps on the first and last kilometres", says Karsten Sachsenröder, Sales Manager of DB Schenker Rail. Dieter Gerfer, CEO DHL FoodServices, adds: "DB Schenker Rail offers our customer Freixenet the option of shifting truck transportations systematically to the railway."
