DCT Gdansk to lift handling capacity up to 3 million TEU

Banks to provide up to EUR 290 million for refinance of existing debts and for the construction of a new deepwater berth in DCT Gdansk

DCT Gdansk has finalized the financing process for the expansion of the biggest container terminal in the Baltic Sea, by volume handled in 2013. The group of commercial and development banks will finance the investment and provide up to EUR 290 million for the project. Conclusion of the financing process, together with the appointment of NV Besix SA as general contractor, are important milestones making way for the start of the investment’s construction phase.

The second facility in DCT Gdansk, which will be fully operational in 2016, will allow the terminal to meet growing demand for deep-sea services in Central-Eastern Europe. The new 650 meter long berth will increase DCT’s annual handling capacity to up to 3 million TEU in the first stage of construction. New berth at DCT Gdansk will be able to handle Ultra Large Container Vessels of capacity exceeding 18,000 TEU. It will be equipped with 5 STS cranes and the required additional yard equipment.

DCT Gdansk received its first vessel in June 2007. Since January 2010 , it started receiving on a weekly basis 8.000 TEU container vessels departing from the Far East. This direct connectivity with Asia made DCT one of the fastest growing terminals in the world. The new era for DCT opened in May 2011, when the facility started handling the Maersk Line’s E-type class container vessels with the capacity of 15.500 TEU, the world’s largest ships at that time. In 2013 the container terminal handled more than 1.15 million TEU.
