Deutsche Bahn and Gysev Cargo plan to form a partnership

Deutsche Bahn and Gysev Cargo intend to establish a joint venture for cargo transport on the railway from the Black Sea to Passau

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is taking a new attempt to strengthen their rail cargo transport in Austria and Hungary, as reports the daily newspaper Der Standard. The company selected the Austro-Hungarian Raaberbahn, namely the cargo transport subsidiary Gysev Cargo, as a potential partner. The two enterprises intend to form a joint venture and handle rail cargo transportations from the Black Sea to Passau, Germany. The newspaper got to know this from owners of the Raaberbahn company.

Dr. Csaba Szekely, General Manager of Raaberbahn confirmed these plans. Raaberbahn intends to establish a joint subsidiary with DB, he said in a statement. The project was currently being examined by the boards of Raaberbahn. This week the Raaberbahn supervisory board is holding a meeting; in a general meeting on 13 March the 49-per cent holding shall be approved.

What is reportedly still unsettled is whether the forwarding subsidiary DB Schenker will hold a 51 per cent-stake in the joint venture, or the DB cargo division itself. DB will presumably provide the assets, thus the locomotives, while Gysev Cargo will provide lower-cost Hungarian staff.
