Deutsche Bahn and RZD consider Russian JV

DB Schenker Rail and the RZD subsidiary TransContainer have reaffirmed their intention to investigate the feasibility of setting up a joint venture to provide logistics services in Russia, with a focus on the automotive sector.

The aim is to meet the growing demands of suppliers and vehicle manufacturers in the Kaluga region for supplementary logistics services.

The joint venture company, together with the partners, would develop logistics services for both European and Russian car manufacturers and component suppliers in Kaluga that are to be provided as onward carriage services for road and rail shipments.

DB Schenker has worked with the RZD subsidiary TransContainer in the transportation business to Kaluga for the past four years.

Russia is one of the major growth markets in the automotive sector, with increasing numbers of car manufacturers – including VW, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Mitsubishi and Volvo – and suppliers setting up facilities in the Kaluga region, which is located around 160 km south of Moscow.

DB Schenker Rail has handled automotive shipments to Kaluga for VW/Skoda since 2007.

If the joint venture investigation is positive, then the joint venture company could become operational before the year is out, subject to the approval of the relevant bodies and authorities.
