DHL Express launches B2C customs guideline in Austria

DHL Express in Austria registers double-digit increase in international e-commerce shipments from Asia, USA and Turkey

Fort the first time DHL, the international specialist for express shipments registers a significant increase in e-commerce shipments from non-EU member countries in Austria this year. Already in recent years the share of e-commerce shipments and hence B2C business grew considerably. However, this involved mainly imported shipments from the customs-free EU zone. Progressing globalisation in online trade is reflected by a double-digit growth in international e-commerce shipments for DHL Express in Austria this year.

“Since this year our core segment – international express shipments – reflects the increasing globalisation in the B2C market. As much as 45 per cent of international shipments from non EU member countries are delivered to private recipients. In particularly in the time before Christmas we register 20 per cent more international e-commerce shipments compared to the rest of the year. Imports from China and Hong Kong account for more than half of this volume, followed by USA, India, Turkey and Japan“, says Ralf Schweighöfer, Managing Director DHL Express Austria.

But often the consumer is not aware that in so many cases, additional customs fees and import sales taxes have to be paid when receiving the goods. Such shipments, especially from Asia, are often stopped by the customs authorities, as the bills often contain too low commodity values.

Ralf Schweighöfer: „Unfortunately, the problem with too low specified goods values is not so easy to influence. However, the end user can speed up customs clearance and hence the receipt of the shipment by providing us with – for example, by order or bank transfer confirmation – the actual value of goods as soon as possible“.

With more than 220 countries and 120,000 destinations, more than 31,000 vehicles and 250 own aircraft, DHL Express has the world’s largest network of international shipping. As one of the world’s largest licensed customs service provider, the company is able to provide the fastest possible release on import shipments.

DHL Express has provided a guideline for private recipients titled „Shopping on the Internet“ on their website:
