DHL Express opens new logistics facility in Midrand

DHL Express has opened its new R5.5m facility in Midrand, South Africa.

Michael Druce, Managing Director of DHL Express in South Africa, says the new facility, comprising 726 sq m of warehouse and 405 sq m of office space, offers secure access, ease of use and is easily accessible. "We expect major service benefits for customers as less time is spent by our staff at the facility and more time on route, making sure that deliveries and collections take place even faster," says Druce.

Druce also said DHL has implemented the ‚Drive In‘ concept which is part of the company’s optimised processing and warehouse design methodology. It enables a vehicle to drive into the warehouse and ramp up to the conveyors to load or offload. The practice results in a quicker processing time of goods, meaning that a courier is able to stay out longer on route to serve customers. Quicker turn-around times for shipments also mean that DHL is able to get them on flights quicker, leading to faster delivery to the end-customer. "In addition, the "drive-in" concept will be implemented over time at all DHL’s ground station facilities in South Africa," Druce added.

In line with the company’s target to improve its carbon efficiency by 30% by 2020, DHL Express South Africa is converting its fleet to run on natural gas. The first four vehicles have been converted and this will be extended to all the operations in the rest of South Africa over time. On average, gas-driven vehicles reduce carbon emissions by between 30% and 35% compared to petrol and diesel.
