DHL Express to buy eight long-distance freight aircraft by 2014

DHL Express’ new North Asia Hub in Shanghai accelerates processes of international goods exchange

On 12 July the logistics company DHL opened its biggest express hub in Asia – the USD 175 million (EUR 140 million) DHL Express North Asia Hub at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The company also announced plans to further invest USD 132 million (EUR 100 million) to add eight freight aircraft to service high demand routes between Shanghai and North Asia, Europe and the US, by 2014. Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL, said: “DHL Express North Asia Hub is a logistic milestone in DHL’s Asia Pacific network and the culmination of a multi-hub and aviation strategy that cements our leadership position in terms of connections, customer convenience and cost-effectiveness.”

Covering a land area of 88,000 m² (roughly equivalent to 13 football pitches), DHL Express’ North Asia Hub can process up to 20,000 documents and 20,000 parcels an hour. The facility completes the multi-hub Asian network. Through four regional hubs in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore DHL Express links over 70 gateways located throughout the Asia-Pacific region. DHL’s infrastructural network is served by a fleet of over 40 aircraft covering 40 countries and territories, and utilising approximately 690 commercial flights per day in Asia Pacific.

DHL will be deploying eight new freighter aircraft on the routes between Shanghai and North Asia, Europe and the US. The planned flights will be operated by the subsidiaries Polar Air, Aerologic, and DHL Air UK. Building on existing direct connections between the DHL Express North Asia Hub in Shanghai to Hong Kong, Osaka, Tokyo, and DHL’s global hubs in Leipzig and Cincinnati, the planned investments in the next two years will enhance capacity on these routes.

In addition new connections between Shanghai and East Midlands, UK shall be established, and DHL plans to increase capacity on routes between Shanghai and other cities in North Asia, China and Taiwan. Over the next few months, DHL will add direct connections to Incheon, Taipei and Chinese cities such as Dalian and Qingdao, with Beijing and Xiamen likely to come on stream in 2013.
