DHL launches another direct LCL service from China to the US
DHL has launched a direct LCL service from Shanghai to Atlanta, enhancing its connectivity between China and the US with the new weekly service that reduces transit times by at least seven days. Currently, LCL freight bound for Atlanta ex-Shanghai is shipped by sea to Los Angeles for unloading from the consolidation container. In LA freight is combined with other freight for its onward journey to Atlanta. Operated by DHL Global Forwarding’s in-house carrier, Danmar Lines, the new direct service from Shanghai bypasses the re-handling in LA and the consolidation containers are instead transferred directly to the railway station, thereby reducing transit time to 21 days. Shipments arriving in Atlanta will also be delivered on to to several major US cities, including Charlotte, Dallas, Memphis, Miami, Nashville and Orlando through DHL’s inland network. China is currently the US’s second largest trading partner, with trade amounting to US$285 billion during the first eight months of this year. During the first nine months of this year, Shanghai Port handled 21.6 million TEU, exceeding Singapore to become the world’s busiest port in terms of container throughput. Steve Huang, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, China, said that the new direct LCL service reflects DHL’s continued confidence in China and its commitment to customers, especially the SMEs that are increasingly turning to ocean freight for greater cost efficiencies.
