DHL spare parts logistics tests electric vehicles

DHL starts pilot ‚Zero-Emission‘ ccoperation of DHL and Renault with regard to the use of electric vehicles in urban spare parts logistics

In mid 2013 the globally active logistics company DHL will start a pilot in spare parts logistics. To be more specific, the project is about using only electric vehicles in inter-urban distribution of automotive spare parts. The programm, which is supported by an electric mobility programm run by the German government, will start in and around Bonn with a total of 80 units of the two Renault types  ‚Kangoo Z.E.‘ and ‚Fluence Z.E.‘ (zero emission). The fleet used so far basically also consists of Renault Kangoo vehicles but with a traditional engine. Until 2016 about 140 of the electric cars will be used in urban distribution. This will result in a CO2 reduction of more than 500 tons each year. In future this environmentally-friendly system will be used in metropolitan areas in Europe, Asia as well as North and South America. The cooperation between DHL and Renault, which has existed for years, also comprises a logistics solution for the battery systems in the electric cars. Whereas the cars themselves are owned by DHL, the batteries are leased. For now Renault will take care of exchange and maintenance of the batteries with a net weight of up to 335 kgs on the basis of a three-year contract.

With 12.000 locations in more than 220 countries and about 285.000 employees, DHL is one of the leading logistics service providers worldwide. The company is part of the Deutsche Post DHL Group and generated a turnover of more than 55 billion Euros in 2012.
