duisport Group reports stable container transport

Port of Duisburg felt economic slump of coal and steel trade in 2009

The 2009 throughput statistics of the Duisburg-based duisport Group shows bright and dark sides. Considerable declines in turnover of coal and steel are opposed to a pleasant balance of container traffic. The volumes of the vessel, train and truck transports amounted to 1.82 million TEU and were slightly below the 2008 figure (1.89 million TEU). Erich Staake, CEO of Duisburg Hafen AG, considers this as a confirmation of the investment strategy of the past years, which aims for intelligent transport networking and the targeted expansion of the logistics hub duisport.

The total cargo throughput in the Duisburg ports amounted to 44 million tons in 2009. This is minus 19 per cent compared to the previous year. The main reason therefore was the drastic drop in the quantity of coal and steel.Oil and chemical products posted a moderate decline of 3 per cent in each of the two cargo segments.
