duisport handled more than 1 million TEU in 2008

Port of Duisburg expects goods handling to decline in 2009

The business trend of the duisport-Group in 2008 was characterised by increases in volume during the first nine months as well as a collapse in the fourth quarter. During the reference period 54.5 million tons of goods were put through the facilities at the port of Duisburg. In 2007 the duisport-Group showed 55.1 million tons at this item. Container throughput beat the 1 million TEU mark for the first time – which equals a 12%-growth compared to the previous year.

“The double-digit expansion of combined transportation shipments nearly made up for the decline of business in the coal and steel segments of the transportation market”, Erich Staake, Duisburger Hafen AG’s Chief Executive Officer, commented on the results. The Manager expects the current extremely difficult environment to cause a decline in cargo transfers in 2009.
