Economic crisis hits Maersk/Safmarine with full impact

Big losses in container shipping segment of A.P. Moller – Maersk 
 

The container shipping segment of A.P. Moller – Maersk, represented by the companies Maersk Line and Safmarine, suffered big losses in the first half-year of 2009. As a consequence of the global financial and economic crisis forwarded volumes fell 7 per cent compared to 2008, to 6.6 million TEU. The fierce down of freight charges resulted in a minus of 30 per cent in sales revenues to USD 9.8 billion. 

The segment result after tax deduction shows a loss of USD 961 million in the interim report. Between January and June 2008 this item showed a profit at the amount of USD 278 million. Maersk Line and Safmarine operate a joint fleet consisting of 501 vessels with a capacity of 2 million TEU.
