Economic crisis weighs heavyly on HHLA Group

HHLA Group records step down in business

The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) feels the impact of the global economic crisis. From January to June 2009 turnover showed a year-on-year down of 24.7 per cent to EUR 501 million. The operative result decreased by 51 per cent. Container throughput was 35.3 per cent less than last year. This item amounted to exactly 2.42 million TEU in the first half-year 2009. Volumes transported in the business unit “Intermodal“ dropped 23.5 per cent to 716,000 TEU.

The HHLA Management encounters this development with a package of measures. This means operating expenses shall be reduced by EUR 160 to 180 million for the year 2009 as a whole. The volume of investments has been further staggered and reduced to a target figure of EUR 220 million for 2009. Moreover,  the 3,500 staff members at the Hamburg location will participate in the “Securing the Future” project that combines training and short-time working.
