Export keeps the Port of Hamburg on a growth course throughout the first six months of 2012

Port of Hamburg registered 2.7 per cent-increase in total throughput in the first half of the year 2012; container traffic was up 1.9 per cent

Based on a strong export volume, the Port of Hamburg registered growth in cargo throughput in the first six months of 2012. At 65.8 million tonnes total volume was 2.7 per cent above last year’s figure. At 45 million tonnes or 4.4 million TEU container throughput was dominating and showed a plus of 1.9 per cent. The relatively low growth was mainly due to the throughput result in the empty containers segment, whereas throughput of loaded containers at 3.8 million TEU was up 4.7 per cent.

In spite of a difficult economic environment in Europe and a weakening China trade, which has particular importance for the Port of Hamburg, Germany’s biggest universal port posted positive results for general and bulk cargo in the reporting period: At 46 million tonnes general cargo throughput was up 3 per cent. In the segment of bulk cargo 19.8 million tonnes were moved, which means a growth of 2.2 per cent.

Export accounted for about 97 per cent of total growth in the Port of Hamburg generated in the first half of the year. In the first six months of the year exportations amounted to a total volume of 28.4 million tonnes, which means an increase of 6.4 per cent. Container loads accounted for 79 per cent of this significant increase in export, while, bulk cargo accounted for 19 per cent and conventional cargo did so for 2 per cent.
