Felbermayr builds protection against erosion for Romania’s Danube delta

River bank protection project of the Felbermayr company Reinhold Meister Wasserbau GmbH scheduled to be completed in December

The Felbermayr company Reinhold Meister, specialising on water engineering, has been working on the bank protection along the Sulina Channel in Romania since July. The construction site is situated in the midst of the Danube delta, about 25 km before the Danube estuary to the Black Sea.

The primary target of the project of the Reinhold Meister Wasserbau GmbH is the protection of the river banks. In addition to profiling and stabilisation of the banks on a 15 km segment of the Sulina Channel for the protection against erosion, the project includes also the construction of a nine kilometres path along the banks, says Reinhold Meister, project manager. Completion of the project is planned for December.

The rough terrain in the Danube delta makes it necessary to deliver all bagger machines and building material via the waterway (e.g. about 130,000 tonnes of stones and 55,000 m² sand mats). The decisive reason for the water engineering project was sediments silting up the delta. As the Danube delta is a nature reserve, there is a close cooperation with Romania’s official representative for environmental protection.
