UPS plans to introduce new handheld computers

Joint project of UPS and Honeywell to introduce a new generation of handheld computers

The globally acting parcel delivery service UPS takes another step to consolidate its technology leadership position. Together with Honeywell the enterprise develops a new generation of handheld computers for drivers. The new system is aimed to further improve communication links while adding a number of features that are new to the industry. In total more than 100,000 of the Honeywell computers will be deployed. Field testing of the device is planned for late 2010.

Known internally at UPS as the DIAD V (Delivery Information Acquisition Device V), the Honeywell mobile computer features innovative cellular technology that provides on-the-fly switching between cellular carriers, meaning the computer can automatically jump to another cellular carrier if the preferred carrier’s signal is lost. This industry-leading technology shall further ensure the consignment tracking and a high degree of reliability.

"Starting in 1991, UPS was the first in its industry to equip drivers with a handheld computer," emphasises David Barnes, UPS chief information officer. Over the past two decades, the continuously modernised DIAD has become a critical component of an integrated global network that’s now tracking more than 15 million deliveries every day.
