Fercam assumes 4PL functions for Metro Cash & Carry

Metro Cash & Carry wants to improve structure of logistics services with 4PL services of the Fercam Group

The South Tyrolean transport and logistics enterprise Fercam was announced “Fourth Party Logistics Provider” by the German trade chain Metro Cash & Carry International GmbH. The recently signed contract helps a logistics model that is barely spread in Italy to break through. The main target of the cooperation is to increase the efficiency of the control and integration ability along the delivery chain and the structure of all logistics services for Metro.

The services for the Metro project comprise the logistics administration, merchandising, which means the sale of goods from several suppliers in Europe and the Far East as well as the re-sale to Metro companies in Europe and delivery of these goods to the relevant Metro distribution centres. The goods purchased by Fercam are stored temporarily in the company’s own logistics centre in Ottobiano (33,000 m²) and afterwards distributed according to the requirements of the European distribution centres of Metro to the same. The trade chain profits from the 4PL contract in the form of sharply reduced stock volumes and an optimised logistics chain.

“The 4PL service provider basically creates a new relation between the customer and the supplier, which differs from the classic logistics model offered in the market so far. With the direct administration and hence the direct responsibility for the complete Metro logistics we are responsible to attain the targets. The so-called Fourth Party Logistics Provider model is a partnership in its broadest sense between customers and suppliers,” explains Marcello Corazzola, Manager of the business unit logistics and distribution Italy of Fercam who is in charge of the implementation of the Metro project.
