First “climate-neutral” large-scale client of SBB Cargo

Swiss concrete elements producer saw drives “climate-neutrally” with SBB Cargo

SBB Cargo has won saw, a producer of concrete elements, as its first customer of climate-neutral rail transport services. “Despite ecological advantages of rail transport there are inevitable CO2 emissions, which will be neutralised by means of climate protection measures“, the enterprise states in a press release.

Since the beginning of October 2009 SBB Cargo offers transportations with CO2 compensation for which they cooperate tightly with the non-profit foundation myclimate. The company saw from Rhine Valley in St. Gallen, which produces concrete elements for the construction of commercial buildings and lofts, is the first client to decide in favour of this option of active climate protection.

By use of their rail connection in Widnau the saw group, which has been relying on environmentally friendly cargo transport on the rail for quite some time, receives around 4,700 wagons of gravel and cement per year. More and more frequently concrete elements are loaded and forwarded with overnight block trains to construction sites throughout Switzerland. Thanks to this 11,489 truck trips and thus 1,023 tons of carbon dioxide were saved in the year 2008.
