Gebrüder Weiss sets up new distribution centre in Bulgaria

EUR 8 million-investment: New building in Elin Pelin to serve as Gebrüder Weiss’ new distribution centre for the Balkans and Central Asia from the end of 2014

The international transport and logistics company Gebrüder Weiss is launching a major construction project in Southeastern Europe. A ground breaking ceremony recently took place for the new Bulgarian branch in Elin Pelin near Sofia. The new building will replace the existing site in Sofia and serve as a new distribution centre for the Balkans (Serbia, Greece) and Central Asia. The investment volume totals roughly EUR 8 million. The staff will be increased from the current 60 to 90 employees once the new construction is completed.

Within the next couple of months, a modern logistics centre with logistics warehouses (6,000 m²), handling areas (1,880 m²) and office space (1,300 m²) will be constructed at the site which covers a total area of approximately 57,000 m². “In addition to an ideal infrastructure, the new distribution centre in Elin Pelin offers above all more space for the logistics business and the transhipment towards the Balkans and Central Asia. Its role will be to drive forward the current growth in these regions. Moreover, the centre will be an important interface for the most recent branches in Turkey and Georgia,” says Thomas Moser, Regional Manager South-East/CIS at Gebrüder Weiss.

“At our modern distribution centre, we will offer the entire service portfolio of Gebrüder Weiss – ranging from land transports and air and sea freight to individual logistics solutions. All services will be implemented with the usual high quality standards of Gebrüder Weiss,” says Marieta Grigorova, Country Manager for Gebrüder Weiss Bulgaria.

Gebrüder Weiss has been operating in Bulgaria since 1994. In the initial years the logistics company made a name for itself in the field of groupage freight in the region. The existing facility in Sofia was built in 2003. Today, Gebrüder Weiss Bulgaria generates 70 per cent of its turnover from national and international land transports. In addition, warehouse logistics and air and sea freight have also seen significant growth over the last three to four years.
