Since 1 January 2015 a national legal minimum wage of EUR 8,50 applies in Germany. About 3.7 million employees of the low wage sector shall benefit from this new regulation. The introduction of the minimum wage from will increase their wages from the start of this year.

The minimum wage is a legal limit, which must not be dropped below in the future. Thus, the minimum wage protects workers in the low wage sector from dumping wages, thus reducing the number of workers who depend on social benefits despite full-time employment. A transitional arrangement simplifies the entrance to minimum wage for all industries with significantly lower wages than EUR 8,50.
