The federal cartel office approved the agreement from 30 May 2012 between Stena Line (Gothenburg) and Scandlines Deutschland GmbH about the acquisition of a total of five ferry routes between Sweden, Germany and Latvia. The acquisition is part of Stena Line’s expansion strategy in growth markets and shall be complete by the end of August.

This takeover means an increase in revenues of the Swedish Stena Line by about SEK 1 billion to a total of SEK 12.1 billion in 2013. The five ferry routes are operated as follows: Travemünde – Ventspils/Liepaja, Nynäshamn-Ventspils, Rostock-Trelleborg and Sassnitz-Trelleborg. In total three vessels will be deployed on these routes, two of the ships are on charter.

Established in 1962, Stena Line has become one of the biggest ferry enterprises in the world today. In 2011 they operated 32 vessels on 19 own routes. The ferry shipping company has five own ports and transported almost 15 million passengers, about 3 million cars and 1.6 million freight units between the Netherlands and Great Britain, in the Irish Sea as well as in the Baltic Sea between Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland and Germany.
