Hamburg Port Railway achieves container record on tha railway and plans to invest more than EUR 70 million in 2012:

Hamburg’s Port Railway moved as many containers in 2011 as never before and thus consolidated its peak position in Europe. For the first time more than two million containers (TEU) rolled on the tracks of the Port Railway within a year. This is 6.5 per cent above the figure of 2010.

In total HPA Hamburg Port Authority expects 41.3 million tons of goods in 2011 on the Port Railway (2010: more than 40 million). Thus Hamburg consolidates its position as a leading railway port in Europe. More than 300 kilometres rail tracks form the spine of Germany’s biggest seaport.

To keep this position, HPA plans to invest the record amount of more than EUR 70 million in 2012 into the Port Railway. In addition to a double track connection of the container terminal Altenwerder, this plan contains also investments into the existing network and the expansion of the port railway stations Waltershof, Hamburg Süd and Hohe Schaar.

The Port Railway is an enterprise of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). Its network comprises about 300 kilometres of tracks and about 880 switches. About 110 kilometres of the tracks are electrified. In the Port of Hamburg the Port Railway comprises more than 170 rail sidings of throughput, logistics, and port industry facilities. On workdays more than 200 cargo trains with more than 4,500 wagons are operated per day. In total 93 railway enterprises are operating on the tracks of the Port Railway.
