Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd consider merger

Flagships of German container shipping business are investigating in negotiations if a merger would be of interest

Germany’s two leading providers of global liner shipping business are considering to form an extensive alliance. The Executive Boards of Hapag-Lloyd AG and of Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft KG (Hamburg Süd), in agreement with their shareholders, are investigating if, and under what conditions, a merger of both companies would be of interest. This was announced in a joint short press release the two companies issued on 18 December.

A merger of Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd would result in the world’s fourth-largest container shipping company, operating about 250 vessels and slot capacity for more than 1 million TEU. Hapag-Lloyd is currently ranked sixth in the industry service “Alphaliner“, Hamburg Süd is ranked 12th. Both companies employ a total of about 11,500 staff. Together they represented a summed up turnover of more than EUR 10 billion in 2011.

The Hamburg Süd group is operating two brands in container shipping business – Hamburg Süd as German carrier, and Aliança as Brazilian shipping company with vessels sailing under the Brazilian flag. Their 100 vessels with slot capacity for 395,000 TEU operated on 40 liner services transported about 3.125 million TEU in 2011.

Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet consists of 150 container vessels, offering transport capacity for 679,000 TEU, handling a transport volume of 5 million TEU in 2011. The program of the Hamburg-based shipping company covers 90 liner services connecting all continents. Both, Hapag-Lloyd’s container stock (more than 1 million TEU), as well as Hamburg Süd’s (430,000 TEU) include a high proportion of reefer containers.
