Hapag-Lloyd improved results in 2008

Hapag-Lloyd asserted its position in a difficult market in 2008

For 2009 the Management of the container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd (Hamburg) reckons with a considerable slump in results as a result of the prognosticated declines in transport volumes and freight rates. In the financial year 2008 the enterprise affronted diverse obstacles such as the effects which the financial crisis had on the real economy, the increase in bunker prices to the third quarter and the minor value of US-dollars compared to the Euro. Thanks to increasing freight rates by almost 13 per cent the company was able to rise its turnover compared to last year by 4 per cent to EUR 6.2 billion. The operative result improved by 19 per cent to EUR 211 million. The shipping company’s globally transported volumes rosed by 2 per cent to 5.54 million TEU.

Shortly before the presentation of the balance sheet for 2008, the planned sale of Hapag-Lloyd was finalised successfully. TUI AG disposed the container shipping line for a company value of EUR 4.45 billion to the “Albert Ballin“-Holding. TUI AG is holding 43.33 per cent of the Albert Ballin“-Holding and will provide an additional liquidity frame.
