Hapag-Lloyd to implement a Low Sulfur Fuel Charge (LSF)

Hapag-Lloyd: Implementation and Increase of Low Sulfur Fuel Charge – Trans Atlantic Trade – Eastbound & Westbound

Hapag-Lloyd will introduce and revise the Low Sulfur Fuel Charge effective September 3, 2012. In a letter tó their customers they announce, that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has officially designated waters off the North American Coast as an Area in which stringent international emissions standards will apply for all ships. The North America Emissions Control Area (ECA) has been enforced since August 1, 2012.

As a result, Hapag-Lloyd will have to buy more expensive fuel with only 1% sulfur content when sailing within 200 nautical miles of the North American Coast. Due to the increased cost Hapag-Lloyd is forced to implement a Low Sulfur Fuel Charge (LSF) in the Mediterranean to and from North America trade and has to increase the LSF in the North Europe to and from North America trade. The Low Sulfur Fuel Charge (LSF) in the trade between Europe / Mediterranean and North America (all coasts) – applied for both directions USD 20 per TEU on the routes Mediterranean and Africa to/from North America and USD 25 in the trade lane North Europe to/from North America.
