HHLA group beats its competitors’ growth

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG achieved double-digit growth volumes in the container and intermodal segments in 2011

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) looks back on a successful financial year 2011. The company utilised the strong growth in Asia and Eastern Europe as well as the good economic development in Germany to improve its market position once again, says Klaus-Dieter Peters, HHLA’s Chairman of the Executive Board, when presenting the prelimindary fuigures.

Throughput in HHLA’s container segment rose by 21.3 percent to 7.1 million standard containers (TEU) in the past financial year. “As in 2010, the group succeeded in gaining market shares and thereby expanding its market position”, reads the press release. The increase in container throughput was driven by strong growth in the Far East and Eastern Europe – shipping regions which are particularly important for the enterprise – along with further improvements in handling services for mega-container ships offered by the company, they explain.

The volume of hinterland traffic in HHLA’s intermodal segment, comprising the brands TFG Transfracht, Metrans and Polzug, increased by 11.3 percent to 1.9 million TEU. Ramping up the hub and shuttle services for the Czech Republic and Poland contributed substantially to this growth. According to preliminary, unaudited figures, the port logistics group achieved revenues of approximately EUR 1.215 billion (previous year: EUR 1.068 billion) and an operating result (EBIT) of around EUR 205 million (previous year: EUR 193 million) in the 2011 financial year.
