HZ Cargo opens PKP Cargo access to Adriatic ports

Strategic cooperation with HZ Cargo (Croatia) marks an important element of the PKP Cargo expansion strategy in Central and Southern Europe

PKP Cargo has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with HZ Cargo, the Croatian national rail freight carrier. Both companies will cooperate in providing services to their current customers, shipping the freight within the Baltic – Adriatic Corridor and establish joint logistics offer for the prospects. Cooperation with the Croatian partner provides PKP Cargo with access to intensively modernized ports in Rijeka and Ploce, HZ Cargo terminals and relatively extensive rail network as well as enable more effective rolling stock utilization.

The signed agreement is an important element of the PKP Cargo expansion strategy focused on Central and Southern Europe. It may operate trains on independent basis in nine EU Member States, however the area of Balkans has remained unavailable for the Polish carrier – until now. Partnership with HZ Cargo will enable strict cooperation in the area of rail freight and providing logistics services within the Baltic, Adriatic and North Seas triangle and on the Balkans.

“This is an important step in the strategy of PKP Cargo development and expansion in Central and Southern Europe and making the full use of the capacity of the N-S transport corridors. Cooperation with HZ Cargo has perfectly fulfilled the acquisition of AWT. It is our opportunity to gain new customers, not only on the Balkans. Large investments, which have been currently delivered in the Croatian ports translate into opportunity to increase the scale of intermodal operation and win attractive orders in this rapidly developing market sector,” says Chief Executive Officer of PKP Cargo Adam Purwin. “As the transport services in certain European countries are dominated by national carriers with market share reaching 70%-80%, such strategic alliances with the local leaders remain in most cases the only attainable formula to develop international activity,” he adds.

Both companies will strictly cooperate in the area of commercial offer and development of joint products for the customers. Significant operational synergies will be achieved thanks to better utilization of rolling stock and mutual access to the terminals managed by both partners.

HZ Cargo is the largest rail freight carrier in Croatia, with market share exceeding 90% and shipping several millions of freight tonnes a year. The company provides complex freight services and specializes in rail freight.

PKP Cargo is Poland’s largest and Europe’s second largest rail freight carrier. In 2014, PKP Cargo Group reached app. 48.5% of market share in terms of freight volume and more than 57% in terms of transport performance.
