IChemE launches new catalysis medal and fellowship

IChemE is launching a new fellowship and medal in commemoration of Syd Andrew, a distinguished professor in the field of catalysis. Through the generosity of Andrew, who passed away last year, the Andrew Medal will be awarded to a person of outstanding achievement in catalysis or a closely related field every three years.

In addition, the winner of the medal will also be invited to deliver a lecture on the science of the formulation of heterogeneous catalysts.
The Andrew Fellowship will annually provide an award of £10,000/y for up to four years, to two candidates to carry out research into the science of the formulation of heterogeneous catalysts. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered to a maximum of £5,000/y.

IChemE accredited universities from all over the world are encouraged to nominate candidates working within this field. Organisations with a specific interest in catalysis are also invited to nominate.

Fellowship recipients will be expected to visit a number of industrial institutions and academic departments in different countries to develop their interests. At the end of each year they will be required to submit a summary of their achievements and a proposal for the following year.

IChemE ceo David Brown says: “We’re delighted that, through the generosity or Professor Andrew, we are able to do more to recognise this important area of chemical engineering. We have already appointed an international panel which includes senior representation from industry, academia and our Catalysis Special Interest Group to help us assess the candidates and we want to use the Andrew Medal and Fellowship to raise awareness and understanding of catalysis in industry.”

The deadline for nominations is 30 September.

IChemE awards a number of medals and prizes every year to recognise achievements across all aspects of chemical process and biochemical engineering. They also provide an opportunity to recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals or groups to the development or wellbeing of IChemE
