Increased draft and new container storage areas at Luka Koper

Luka Koper completes first stage of dredging of harbour waters at its container terminal allowing vessels with a draft up to 13.5 to enter the Northern part of Basin I

The dredging works, which were co-financed within the EU project NAPADRAG (TEN-T programme), represents for the Port of Koper a very important investment especially in the light of the arrival of bigger and more loaded vessels which are announcing an even more positive trend in the container throughput. The inadequate draft had been an obstacle for the large container ships, especially from the Far East, to call Koper fully loaded. With the completion of the dredging to –14 meters it can be expected that Luka Koper will be the first port of call for ships entering the Adriatic.

In addition, a new stacking area of 6.480 m² close to the berthing place for container vessels also became operational, providing some 600 TEU of additional storage.

The mentioned projects are part of the Pier 1 extension project, which includes also seabed dredging in Basin I to -15 m and construction of an additional 100 m of quayside together with all the equipment. The project, with the estimated value of EUR 78 million, will be executed in several stages by 2018. The total investment in the extension of Pier I will increase the annual cargo throughput capacity of the container terminal from the current 750,000 to 980,000 TEU annually.
