Increasing freight transport on the river Danube in Austria in 2010

Calculations of Statistics Austria show a positive balance of the development of freight transport on the Danube in 2010

In the river shipping industry, the pendulum lately swung back to growth. According to Statistics Austria, a total of 11.1 million tons of goods was transported as freight transport on the Austrian section of the Danube in 2010. This means an increase of 18.6 per cent compared to 2009. Thus after massive declines in the year 2009, the volumes of transport on the Danube almost reached the level of 2008 at 11.2 million tons, as Statistics Austria reports.

The number of laden journeys rose 7.5 per cent year-on-year to 10,391 in 2010. The total transport performance (the product of transport volume and distance travelled) rose 19.4 per cent to 11.5 billion ton kilometres. On Austrian national territory, the transport performance amounted to 2.4 billion ton kilometres (up 18.6 per cent).

Increases were reported for all of the different transport segments. The international goods receipt grew by 25.4 per cent to 6.2 million tons compared to the previous year 2009, and was the only segment to outperform the 2008 tonnage (up 8.2 per cent). International goods dispatch showed an increase in transport volume of 5.5 per cent to 1.7 million tons. For transit a growth of 10.6 per cent to 2.7 million tons was determined. The tonnage in inland transport rose by 38.6 per cent to 0.5 million tons in the reference year.

As for types of goods transported on the waterway, only increases were reported except for two types. Transport of iron and metal scrap increased 27.3 per cent to 3.5 million tons. As for fertilisers a 40.4 per cent increase to 1.1 million tons was posted. Also mineral oil products showed a fierce increase of 12.8 per cent to 2.2 million tons in 2010. Solid fuels as well as food and feed products in turn showed declines.
