Lidl plans 580,000ft² regional distribution centre
German supermarket retailer Lidl is planning a 580,000ft² regional distribution centre (RDC) in Leeds, creating around 400 jobs.
The retailer has lodged a reserved matters application to Leeds Council for the facility on the 34.6-acre site known as Plot E at 62 Leeds.
The facility will incorporate a warehouse for chilled, frozen and ambient goods as well as offices, a pallet store, a drivers lounge and a generator. The warehouse will have 20m eaves as well as 108 dock loading doors and HGV spaces – 25 unsecured and 75 secured. There will be 309 car parking spaces (10% EV charging) as well as 140 cycle spaces.
The building will incorporate a number of sustainability features including PVs, LED lighting and PIR lighting controls, as well as waste heat recovery from roof-mounted condensers to heat offices, water reduction measures, CHP and BEM.
The RDC will store and distribute fresh produce and non-food goods to supermarkets across Yorkshire, and has been proposed by Lidl following a review of its distribution network.
As part of the Schwartz Retail Group, Lidl has been operating in the UK since 1994. It currently employs 28,000 people in the UK and has 950 stores and 13 distribution centres.
In 2021, Logistics Manager reported that Lidl secured planning for a new RDC in the South at Belvedere in Bexley, South London.
