“Lighthouse project“: Inauguration of the Traisental connection railway

Rail cargo transport in Traisental to be maintained thanks to a „lighthouse project“ in the Traisen-Gösental region

The Traisental in Lower Austria will have a direct connection to the high-ranking network for rail cargo transport in the future as well. On 1 April the Traisen-Gölsental region, comprising ten municipalities, took over the railway section from Freiland to St. Aegyd/Nw. from the Austrian federal railways ÖBB and thus created the basis for being able to continue cargo transport on the rail. Since then the previous rail segment is operated as a connection railway. On 15 April Landesrat Karl Wilfing inaugurated the “lighthouse project for the whole of Austria“.

Almost two years the destiny of the railway segment Freiland-St.Aegyd/Nw. hang by a thread. Built in 1893 the route was to be closed down. For the entire region, this would have meant a shift of the entire cargo transport from rail to road. The continuation of the connection railway can save more than 4,000 truck trips. The target is to increase transport volume on the railway from 65,000 tonnes (2011) to 90,000 tonnes of goods in the coming ten years.
