“Logistics creates jobs and adds value“

Study by order of Zentral Verband Spedition & Logistik confirms the significance of the logistics industry for Austria’s national economy

A study conducted by the Industriewissenschaftliches Institut (IWI; industrial science institute) about the importance of logistics for the national economy allows the following conclusions according to DDr. Herwig W. Schneider, author of studies and head of the IWI: „Employment in the logistics industry secures a big number of jobs. Each euro invested comes back multiplied and thus has the potential to sustainably strengthen Austria as a business location „.

The most important results of the studies:

-) Every employee in the Austrian logistics sector (160,000 persons in 11,000 companies) secures up to 3.50 jobs in the Austrian economy (560,000 jobs)

-) Every euro of turnover of the domestic logistics companies (EUR 33.6 billion) secures macroeconomic sales of up to EUR 3.88 (EUR 130 billion)

-) Every euro of added value in the logistics industry in Austria secures up to EUR 4.11 in added value in the Austrian economy (EUR 35 billion).

„The calculated multipliers of this economics study illustrate very clearly how important and value-adding logistics is for our leading companies and therefore Austria as a business location,“ said Mag. Wolfram Senger-Weiss, President of the forwarding & logistics association Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik, at a press conference in Vienna. More than 90 per cent of the industry and trade companies responding in the study are convinced that logistics will continue to gain in overall economic importance. One quarter of the respondents see the share of logistics in the company’s success at 30 per cent or more.

The logistics industry had also the potential to offer new employment opportunities to highly qualified professionals but also to less well educated. A new collective agreement provides more attractive starting salaries.

„This study creates also an important basis for argumentation in our industry. However, it also confirmed our demands on politicians to seize on the potential as an opportunity and bring logistics back on track by improving the conditions,“ said Wolfram Senger-Weiss. The first success was the creation of the job as logistics representative and the establishment of a logistics committee in the Ministry of Transport.

The study could also clearly demonstrate that there is still a number of obstacles that must be dismantled. These include the development of multimodality, less bureaucracy in hazardous goods transport, standards for driving bans and logistics areas, promotion of innovative logistics and “No” to nationwide truck toll in Austria.
