Lower Austria and Flanders set up block train concept

Initiatives to improve cargo flow between Lower Austria and Flanders

Representatives of the regions Lower Austria and Flanders have made an agreement upon a package of measures to improve cargo flows. Dr. Petra Bohuslav, member of the government of Lower Austria, responsible for economic affairs, and the Flemish Prime Minister Dr. Kris Peeters have launched a project in a meeting last week. The target of the joint initiative is to establish a regular block train service between Lower Austria and Antwerp.

Morover the two regions agreed upon cooperating in the fields of logistics, innovation and renewable energy. A joint workshop will show up opportunities to cooperate, give targets a concrete form and make them measurable by means of a benchmark system. In this context Prime Minister Peeters talked about a “win-win situation“ for both regions.

Thanks to the seaport of Antwerp, Flanders counts among Europe’s top logistics regions. The logistics industry generates 9 per cent of the gross national product and currently secures around 210,000 jobs.
