Lufthansa Cargo adds global eFreight impetus

Lufthansa Cargo concludes global agreement with IATA to simplify the use of eAWB for forwarding customers

Lufthansa Cargo pushes the use of the electronic air way bill (eAWB): This week the cargo airline singed an agreement of the International Air Transport Association IATA to increase efficiency and simplify the use of electronic air way bills.

Forwarders who want to use the eAWB will only have to sign an IATA agreement for accepting electronically transmitted AWB data. All participating airlines are then automatically included in this agreement. Clear standards for use are set, complex bilateral definitions of legal conditions and interfaces are no longer necessary.

"This industry-wide agreement is an important milestone on our way to completely paperless air cargo transport," said Karl Ulrich Garnadt, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo. "Both our customers and we as an airline benefit from a simpler use of the eAWB as well as faster and more efficient processes."

Lufthansa Cargo plans to exclusively use eAWB by 2015. This year, eAWB should be a standard at all German stations for all destinations within the Lufthansa Cargo network. To date, more than 60 customers were gained worldwide for the use of eAWB.
