Lukoil boosts river shipping in the port of Vienna

Expansion of the Lukoil lube-manufacturing plant in the port of Vienna expected to start in February; there are best logistic basics

Vagit Alekperov, OAO Lukoil President (Moscow), attended a ground-breaking ceremony on 29 January in Vienna, dedicated to the planned expansion of the Lukoil Lubricants plant in the Lobau oil port. The start of construction is scheduled for February 2015.

The lube-manufacturing plant was constructed by OMV at that time. In 2014 Lukoil Lubricants Austria acquired 100 per cent of the plant in Lobau, Vienna, and plans to largely expand the facility, and supply the European automotive industry and construction engineering companies with high quality engine oils from there. As a result also the port of Vienna will be upgraded as an industrial site.

“We are not only upgrading our Austrian lube- manufacturing plant but in fact we are constructing an integrated complex with a number of technological advantages, including the best possible logistic capabilities related to transportation and storage of base oils and end products, and a flexible production process compliant with the contemporary European standards of our key consumers in Europe,” said Vagit Alekperov.

The core of the expansion program is a floating oil transhipment station, the construction of several storage tanks and the reconstruction of existing storage tanks into production tanks. Thus previous capacities can be more than doubled, and ships can be loaded and unloaded.

The future option of direct transhipment from the river ship to railway make Vienna a potential hub for Lukoil in Central and Western Europe. Also for Vienna the expansion is a benefit: In addition to boosting the role of the port of Vienna, the enterprise also creates sustainable jobs through the planned capacity expansion, internally, as well as with local suppliers, service providers and logistics companies.

When the lube manufacturing plant at the Lobau site was built by OMV in 1995, useful utilisation of the Danube as an economic and ecological waterway had already been considered. However, the supply of the enterprise is only economic via road or railway until today, which shall change now.
