Migros tests container transport on the ‘New Silk Road’

Supported by the railway operator InterRail the Swiss retail group Migros tests the land bridge from China to Europe

The Swiss retail group Migros is currently investigating options to use the land bridge from China to Europe. Together with the – also Swiss-based – international railway operator InterRail and the support of CRIMT they recently completed the first test of a railway container transport on the ‘New Silk Road’. The project was dedicated to the test of the documentation and technology of the interfaces between normal and broad gauge.

The enterprises are still keeping a low profile, from where the major volume for such a train can be expected to Switzerland. As to InterRail, who is already experienced in railway traffic between Europe and Asia, the regions central and northwest China are particularly attractive for the land bridge from China via Kazakhstan and Russia to Europe. A favourite therefore might be Chengdu in the province of Sichuan.

Migros (more than 86,000 employees generating about CHF 25.5 billion annual turnover) counts among the companies who attach utmost importance to innovation and environmentally-friendly operation, also in the logistics business. Thus Migros, with more than 400 rail wagons on daily operation in Switzerland is the main client of SBB Cargo. The use of railway transport for logistic solutions has also particular importance for the company’s activities abroad. Hence the interest in the land bridge after the tests are completed successfully might push railway transport to Europe.
