Milestone for Rhine shipping and Swiss Rhine ports

The Swiss National Council stipulated the legal basis for co-financing of port facilities for combined transport services (containers)

In the course of the total revision of the Carriage of Goods Act the Swiss National Council as the first council has approved the application for co-financing of the construction and renewal of port facilities for combined transport on 19 March. This creates the legal basis for an equal position of Rhine shipping on the one hand and rail and road on the other hand. This decision means a milestone for the “Trimodales Containerterminal Basel Nord“-project. Now the Council of State as the second council is expected to handle the Carriage of Goods Act before the end of this year.

The Swiss Rhine ports (SRH) are pleased with the decision of the National Council and see it as a confirmation of their national supply activities together with the port industry and the Basel logistics cluster. The Rhine ports thus arrived in Federal Bern and the national significance of the Rhine shipping was strengthened. This decision will have a positive impact on future projects for the construction and renovation of port facilities.

Hans-Peter Hadorn, Director SRH: „Today’s significant decision of the National Council is a milestone for the Rhine ports and navigation on the Rhine. It is of groundbreaking importance for the national transport and transfer policy – also for Neat Gotthard corridor. But we are not yet at the end of the road, now it’s up to the Council of State to also gain a majority for the equal treatment of transport via ship, rail and road.“

The Swiss Rhine ports are the gateway to the world’s oceans. In Basel, Birsfelden and Muttenz more than 10 per cent of all Swiss imports are handled, which come from all over the world via the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Amsterdam and finally arrive on the Rhine there.
