More than 566 new apprentices of 22 professions with ÖBB

On 1 September 2017, 566 new apprentices started their vocational training of 22 professions with ÖBB. Within the ÖBB Group, more than 1,900 young people are completing their education in Austria, which means a new training record – so far, there have never been as many apprentices at the company.

Over the next few years, the ÖBB will see a change of generations and more than 10,000 new employees will be hired. Therefore, the company would like to create an ideal framework for the vocational training. ÖBB’s CEO Andreas Matthä: “Especially the technical trainings of metal engineering and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics, information and communication technology are regarded as professions with a promising future. As the largest trainer of technical apprentices in Austria, we are training the specialists of the future.

For this purpose, we will invest EUR 67.5 million by 2021, to repair shops and hostels for apprentices. What is particularly worth mentioning, is the central training repair shop in Vienna, Hebbelplatz, which is already under construction and will be completed and put into operation in September 2018. In the future, up to 650 apprentices will complete their training there.”

The ÖBB’s goal is to significantly increase the share of women in the company over the next few years. The proportion of women among the apprentices in the previous year was 16 percent, which could be increased to almost 17 percent this year. In the meantime, more than twice as many women as in the classic commercial professions are trained in technical professions.

Silvia Angelo, CEO ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, explains: “In order to get the necessary highly qualified specialists in the next few years, we want to encourage female apprentices to apply for technical professions. They will soon realise that with us also young women have a chance in the men-oriented world of technology. ”
