New hall in Hamburg for processing of semi-finished cocoa products

H.D. Cotterell invested EUR 10 million into new production hall for processing of semi-finished cocoa products in the port of Hamburg

On November 5 the Hamburg cocoa specialist H.D. Cotterell opened a new production hall at Ellerholzdamm for the melting of cocoa mass and cocoa butter. Thomas Cotterell, owner and manager of the Hamburg-based company specialising in the storage of raw cocoa, semi-finished cocoa products, rubber, nuts and spices, has invested EUR 10 million in the construction of the new facility, as announced the press service of the Port of Hamburg.

In the new production hall every day to about 150 tonnes of cocoa mass can be melted and sterilised, and 100 tonnes of cocoa butter can be melted and deodorised. In the large hall area, a system for deodorising cocoa butter is installed. In this process, the raw material is deprived of it’s own flavor, in order to ensure a consistent product quality. The new facility also allows H.D. Cotterell to reduce the proportion of free fatty acids in cocoa butter.

For storage of liquid raw materials, a tank farm has been built, providing 17 heated tanks. These include six tanks with a capacity of 25 tonnes each, and three tanks each for 50 tonnes of cocoa mass. Eight 25 tonnes-tanks are available for cocoa butter, six of them for deodorised and two for naturale. With an annual turnover of around 250,000 tonnes of cocoa the Hanseatic port is an important center of European cocoa trade.
